UC Merced Expert 

Kim is an applied mathematician whose focus is on research problems at the intersection of science, engineering and mathematics.  As Deputy Director of the UC Merced Center for Computational Biology, Kim is directly involved in exactly that type of interdisciplinary work.  He can comment extensively on the impacts math and computer science are beginning to have on the field of biology -- for example, in the biomedical sciences.  

Kim earned a B.S. in engineering science and applied mathematics from Northwestern University and both M.S. and Ph. D. degrees in applied mathematics from the University of Washington.  He has published more than two dozen articles in his field.  Prior to joining the faculty at UC Merced in 2004, Kim was conducting research in applied mathematics under a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University.
